When an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, teenage postal worker, Sumiteru Taniguchi, was ‘lucky’. He didn’t die on the spot, but received terrible injuries to his back and left arm. Sumiteru is a hibakusha, which is Japanese for an A-bomb survivor. Burns covered his entire back, forcing him to lie on his stomach for nearly two years. Sumiteru devoted the rest of his life to the anti-nuclear movement, showing his scars as a symbol of the horrors of war. More than 70,000 people died in Nagasaki and about 140,000 died in Hiroshima. On August 6 and 9, it will be 77 years since the US dropped atomic bombs on these Japanese cities. Hear chilling accounts from Sumiteru Taniguchi and other hibakusha.
