In Soviet times, the Arctic was famous for its scientific institutions and research facilities, like the deepest well in the world. But now labs, gear and chemicals are abandoned and cause acid rains. Furthermore, a large share of waste is washed into the sea. Eco-volunteers willing to change the situation started the ‘Clean Arctic’ project. They also cooperate with scientists to learn how the plastic breaks down into trace elements and how fragile Arctic nature can be protected from microplastics spreading further into the sea, contaminating natural resources. Scientists try to find bacteria that can eat plastic. What have they come up with so far?
