On March 11th 2011, a deadly earthquake hit Japan. A 15-metre tidal wave triggered by the earthquake flooded the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station’s cooling system, shutting it down. Levels of radioactivity in the area skyrocketed. The authorities evacuated 164,000 locals and imposed a 20km exclusion zone around the plant. Over the years, evacuees have went on to rebuild their lives elsewhere. Only eight years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, did the Japanese authorities allow displaced residents to return to the nearby town of Okuma. Follow the returnees and former residents around what had become a ghost town.
