Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has been offering amnesty to anti-government militants since 2011, even as the war rages on. Those who accept the amnesty are drafted into the Army, and serve in special «Amnestied groups» fighting alongside the government forces they once opposed.
These soldiers have diverse backgrounds, with some joining voluntarily and others coerced. Despite their past differences, they share common experiences of loss and tragedy. Though controversial, the soldiers appreciate the second chance, even if it means risking their lives for the sake of the government.
